Kansas Plumbing License Application & Testing Requirements Guide

Plumbers are not required to have a license in order to work at the Kansas state level; this goes for the general contractors and electrical contractor licenses as well. However, those in the field will need to obtain a local license depending on the city in which they work/plan to work in. Before applying for an apprenticeship, prospecting plumbers will need a high school diploma or GED — college education is not required. Instead, individuals will attend vocational/technical training courses.

To be eligible for a plumbing license, one must meet the requirements of their local government. This outline, in particular, will go over said requirements for the following Kansas cities: Overland Park, Wichita, and Topeka

Kansas Plumbing License Reciprocity

Kansas does not have any reciprocity agreement with any other state. Visit your county’s website for more information about possible reciprocal plumbing license agreements.

Overland Park/Johnson County: Becoming a Class DP Plumbing Contractor

You must complete the following requirements to earn your Class DP Plumbing Contractor license.

Turn in original, signed, and completed application form that must be submitted at or mailed to the following location:

Olathe, Kansas 66061-3486;

Pay the one-time $100 application fee along with a $225 license fee;
Provide proof of General Liability and Worker’s Compensation insurance;
Have an established qualifying individual that possesses one of the following:
- A Bachelor of Science Degree in architecture, engineering, construction science, or construction management from an ABET or ACCE accredited program.
- A certified test score of 75% or higher, on a standard examination as approved by the Contractor License Review Board;
Documentation of the qualifying individual’s experience;
Qualifying individual and company owners are confirmed with a government-issued photo I.D.;
If the firm is a corporate entity, provide evidence that the entity is in good standing. All corporate entities must provide proof of good standing from the Secretary of State from the state in which they are registered.

Topeka: Plumbing Journeyman License Requirements

Once the apprenticeship has been completed, applicants must then apply for a journeyman license. This authorizes you to work in the field as a fully qualified employee. Journeyman applicants in Topeka and Shawnee County must:

Fill out an application;
Pay an application fee of $53;
Show proof of receiving a passing score of 75% or higher from an accredited testing agency;
Those who have received a certificate from the International Code Council (ICC) must provide proof of time in trade and of passing the ICC exam.

Wichita: Plumbing Journeyman License Requirements

Once residents of/those employed in Sedgwick County have completed their apprenticeship, they are then able to apply for their journeyman license upon completion of the following requirements:

One year of field experience and;
One year of plumbing trade school;
Or
Two years of field experience and;
75% or higher on the ICC or IAPMO exam.
And
Completion of the application;
Pay an application fee of $35;
Provide a copy of your test results;
If applicable, bring a copy of your trade school transcripts;
Proof of field experience/apprenticeship.

Plumbing Apprenticeship Requirements

Kansas apprenticeship applicants are encouraged to visit their local Workforce Center during the application period to fill out the application. Applicants will need to bring the requirements with them when they go to fill out the application:

A valid Class C driver’s license;
A copy of your high school diploma or GED with a certified sealed (unopened) copy of your transcripts;
A copy of your birth certificate, proof of citizenship, or legal work status;
Complete a Workkeys test, for which you must make an appointment ahead of time (given at Workforce Centers and may take two to four hours to complete);
Be able to pass a drug screen.

You will be sent a certified letter specifying the date and time of your interview. From here, you will receive a second letter providing you with your rank among the pool of other interviewees — the lower your number, the better your chances of getting an apprenticeship.
