Per Connecticut state law, electricians in the state of Connecticut must hold the appropriate individual or contractor license for their work. In this state, electricians must first register as an apprentice, and then get their journeyperson license. After that, they are able to pursue an electrical contractor license. Licenses must be renewed annually by September 30th, with a $150.00 renewal fee for electrical contractors and a $120.00 renewal fee for journeypeople.
Connecticut Electrical License Reciprocity
Connecticut does not currently have reciprocity agreements with any state for electrical licensing.
Connecticut Electrical Contractor License Requirements
There are many subcategories of electrical contracting licenses in the state of Connecticut. The parameters of work covered by each license are detailed on the Connecticut State website under Electrical License Types and Scope of Work.
- C-5 Limited Electrical Contractor: “The holder of this license may perform only work limited to low voltage, alarm or signal work, audio and sound systems, and telephone-interconnect.”
- E-1 Unlimited Electrical Contractor: “The holder of this license shall be permitted to do all electrical work as defined in section 20-330 of the general statutes.”
- L-1 Electrical Lines Contractor: “The holder of this license may perform only work limited to line construction, including distribution systems, and their allied work, for public and private companies; installation, maintenance and repair of all high-voltage cable splicing and pulling wire for all systems in excess of 2,400 volts; traffic signal and highway lighting installation, maintenance and repair.”
- L-5 Limited Electrical Contractor: “The holder of this license may perform only work limited to low voltage, alarm or signal work, audio and sound systems.”
- T-1 Limited Electrical Contractor: “The holder of this license may perform only work limited to telephone-interconnect systems where such work commences at an outlet receptacle or connection previously installed by a person holding the proper electrical license.”
The requirements to become an electrical contractor in Connecticut are generally as follows:
- Must have held a journeyperson license for a minimum of 2 years, or have proof of equivalent experience (minimum of 6 years);
- Submission of an application for examination ($150.00);
- Passage of the examination.

- Documentation of a completed apprenticeship program OR proof of at least 8,000 hours of in-field experience OR equivalent educational and in-field experience;

Electrician Apprenticeship Requirements
There is no license for apprenticing electricians in Connecticut. Prospective apprentices only need to be accepted into a state-approved school trade program or an independent union or non-union agency and registered with the state of Connecticut ($110 total fee; a $50 fee from the apprentice, and a $60.00 fee from the sponsor).
