The process to become an electrical contractor in the State of Utah is quite similar to becoming a Utah general contractor. In Utah, to advertise as a contractor, one must complete the contractor licensing process. There are two classifications of an electrical contractor (S201 and S200), and both require licensing from the Utah Department of Commerce, Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL). To become an S201 Residential Electrical Contractor, a master or residential master electrician’s license must be obtained. To become an S200 General Electrical Contractor, you must be licensed as a master electrician with the state.
Both Electrical Contractor licenses require the completion of an application, a 25-hour pre-license course, proof of general liability insurance with a minimum of $300,000 in total coverage, and registration as a business entity (sole proprietorship, LLC, S-Corp, or partnership).

There are five levels of electricians in the state of Utah:
- Apprentice Electrician
- Residential Journeyman Electrician
- Journeyman Electrician
- Residential Master Electrician
- Master Electrician
Much like the Utah regulations for plumbing licenses, each level of licensing requires different combinations of training and education, work experience and completed hours in specific areas, as well as examinations.
Utah Electrical License Reciprocity
The state of Utah does not recognize reciprocity with other states, but does allow licensure by endorsement for individual electrical and plumbing licenses. The standard contractor application is required.
Utah Master Electrician Requirements
To become a Master Electrician you must have one of the following:
- Four years of Journeyman experience.
- An associate of applied science degree from an electrical program from a trade school and two years (4,000) hours of Journeyman experience.
- A bachelor of science in electrical engineering from an EAC/ABET-accredited program with one year of experience as a journeyman electrician.
A Master Electrician Application must also be filed and provided to the DOPL including any official transcripts and a summary of work experience, signed by the Master Electrician who supervised over the Journeyman duties performed. The application includes a $110 fee. The Utah Electrical Licensing Theory, Code and Practical Exams at the Master level also needs to be taken through PSI and passed by a score of at least 75% on the Code Exam, 74% on the Theory Exam, and a pass on the Practical Exam.
Utah Journeyman Electrician License Requirements
To become a licensed Journeyman there are some education and experience requirements.
- Licensure as a Residential Journeyman Electrician:
- Completion of a formal trade school or program of substantial equivalence.
- Two years of work experience as a licensed apprentice.
- Or, four years of verified work experience.
- Licensure as a Journeyman Electrician:
- Completion of a program of electrical study in-state or out-of-state that has been approved by the Utah Board of Regents, Utah System of Technical Colleges Board of Trustees.
- Four years of work experience as a licensed apprentice.
- Or, eight years of verified work experience.
Required training may be gained in a Union or non-union apprenticeship, a trade school, or on-the-job training (if an employer will hire you on as an apprentice).
Journeyman Electrician Test
Once the education and experience has been fulfilled a Journeyman exam must be passed. An application with a fee of $110 is required to gain a Journeyman Electrician License.
The Journeyman level examination must be taken through PSI exams split into three parts: code, theory, and practical. The total cost of the test is $216, or $72 for each portion.
- The Code Exam is comprised of 80 questions and is to be completed in 180 minutes, with a minimum score of 75% in order to pass.
- The Theory Test is comprised of 50 questions and is to be completed in 100 minutes, with a minimum passing score of 75%.
- The Practical Exam involves three wiring projects, each of which must be completed in 90 minutes on a pass/fail basis:
- Motor control project,
- Transformer project,
- Lightswitch project.
A Journeyman license must be renewed every two years (on even-numbered years) on November 30th, at a cost of $63.
Electrician Apprenticeship Requirements
There are three opportunities to become an apprentice:
- A union (union memberships are required):
- Utah Electrical Joint Apprenticeship & Training Committee (Utah Electrical JATC).
- The National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA).
- The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW).
- The Independent Electrical Contractors of Utah.
- On-the-job training with an independent non-union employer who is willing to take on an apprentice.
