To become a plumber in Oklahoma you must transition through the different levels of requirements and licensure, beginning with an apprenticeship to working as a journeyman, and finally, becoming a plumbing contractor. In becoming a plumber in Oklahoma, you are certified by the Oklahoma Construction Industries Board, the same as if you were to become an Oklahoma electrician or Oklahoma general contractor.
Oklahoma Plumbing License Reciprocity
Oklahoma has electrical license reciprocity agreements with the following states:
A reciprocal license cannot be a “grandfathered license.” You must hold a license for at least one year before you are eligible to reciprocate. You must fill out the Reciprocal Journeyman License Application and be sure to include any available information under the “Employment Record” section. The application fee is $330 for an electrical contractor, and $75 for an electrical journeyman, and must be submitted with the Reciprocal Journeyman License Application. Oklahoma Plumbing Contractor and Journeyman License Requirements
A plumbing contractor is the highest-ranking licensed plumber in Oklahoma; both apprentice and journeyman plumbers work under plumbing contractors to gain verifiable experience to continue on their path of licensure. A journeyman may supervise up to three apprentices and act as the job foreman.
Applicants for a contracting license must meet the same requirements as a journeyman in addition to having one further year of plumbing experience. The journeyman requirements are as follows:
- You must be 18 years of age or older;
- You must have three years of plumbing experience while being employed by a licensed plumbing contractor, or,
- You must have an equivalent and verifiable three years of experience in the plumbing trade while serving in the U.S. military, or,
- You must have a verifiable out-of-state plumbing license that is both current and in good standing.
The following education experiences may be substituted for a portion of the experience requirements:
- For a two-year substitution:
- An associate degree or Career Tech Diploma that certifies the completion of a plumbing educational program that is:
- A minimum of 1,000 classroom hours;
- Approved by the committee.
- An associate degree or Career Tech Diploma that certifies the completion of a plumbing educational program that is:
- For a one-year substitution:
- A Career Tech diploma that certifies the completion of an educational program that is:
- A minimum of 500 classroom hours;
- Approved by the committee.
- A Career Tech diploma that certifies the completion of an educational program that is:
Both contractor and journeyman applicants must submit a Plumbing Application that includes an application for the plumbing examination. The application must include the correct license and application processing fees totaling:
- Plumbing contractor – $330
- Plumbing journeyman – $75

After completion of the application and examination process, those seeking contracting licenses must submit proof of a $5,000 Corporate Surety Bond made payable to the Oklahoma Construction Industries Board, as well as a certificate of insurance with a minimum of $50,000 in general liability insurance.
Plumbing Contractor and Journeyman Exam
Applicants for an electrical contractor license must pass both portions of the contractor’s exam, the business and law section, as well as the trade section. The exam is proctored by PSI Exams Online, where further testing information such as scheduling an exam or finding an exam location can be found. Examinees must score a minimum of 75% on every applicable section of the exam to pass the exam.
Plumbing Apprenticeship Requirements
Those seeking to gain experience to become a plumbing journeyman or contractor must first complete an apprenticeship. A plumbing apprentice must be 14 years of age or older and have verification of lawful presence in the U.S.
An apprentice must gain on-the-job training with a licensed contractor and must be registered by the state by annually paying fees and filling out an Apprentice Application to receive their valid apprentice card. The application must also include a total fee of $25 dollars made payable to the Construction Industries Board (CIB), and submitted to:
