Licensed electricians must renew their license every three years, while apprentices must renew their certification every year.
New Hampshire Electrical License Reciprocity
Reciprocity agreements allow tradesmen to practice their craft across state lines. New Hampshire has longstanding, independent electrical reciprocity agreements with the following states:
The state of New Hampshire will honor the credentials of journeyman and master electricians from these three states, pending approval of an application.
New Hampshire also has reciprocity agreements through NERA (National Electrical Reciprocal Alliance) with the following states:

New Hampshire Master Electrician License Requirements
The state of New Hampshire defines a master electrician as “a person either employed by another master electrician or who, as a business, hires or employs another to do electrical work, or, without hiring another, makes electrical installations as a principal or auxiliary business for his or her own account.” The requirements to become a high/medium voltage electrician are as follows:
- Proof of a minimum of 2,000 hours of in-field experience as a journeyman electrician;
- Submission of an application ($50);
- Passage of the examination ($80).
Master Electrician Exam
In order to take the exam, you must register and schedule your exam time and location online or over the phone (866-720-7768). A passing grade is 70%.
New Hampshire Journeyman Electrician License Requirements
The state of New Hampshire defines a journeyman electrician as “a person doing work of installing electrical wires, conduits, apparatus, fixtures and other electrical equipment. A journeyman electrician shall be employed by a master electrician, except as provided in RSA 319-C:10.” The requirements to become a high/medium voltage electrician are as follows:
- Proof of a minimum of 8,000 hours of in-field experience as an apprentice electrician;
- Associate’s degree or equivalent classroom education;
- Submission of an application ($50);
- Passage of the examination ($80).

New Hampshire Electrical Insurance Requirements

High/Medium Voltage Electrician License Requirements
The state of New Hampshire defines a high/medium voltage electrician as “a person who, as a business, hires or employs another, as defined in administrative rules, to make electrical installations on high/medium voltage power distribution systems operating at over 600 volts, or without hiring another, makes electrical installations on high/medium voltage power distribution systems operating at over 600 volts, including associated controls and metering, as a principal or auxiliary business for their own account.” The requirements to become a high/medium voltage electrician are as follows:
- Completion of an approved training program;
- Submission of an application ($90);
- Passage of the exam.

Electrician Apprenticeship Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent;
- Acceptance into an approved apprenticeship under a master electrician or through a school program;
