In the state of Wyoming, contracting licenses are regulated by both the state, as well as on a local level. Wyoming general contractors, Wyoming plumbers, and other contractor licenses are deferred to the local level. Electrical licenses, however, are the only licenses that are regulated at the state level. If you wish to become an electrician in the state of Wyoming, you will need to be certified by the Wyoming Department of Fire Prevention and Electrical Safety. The electrical certifications that can be pursued in the state of Wyoming include:
- An apprenticeship license;
- A limited or low voltage electrical license;
- A journeyman electrician license;
- A master electrician license.
Each license requires supervised on-the-job training hours, classroom education, and must be applied for and renewed.
Wyoming Electrical License Reciprocity
The application for reciprocity for electrical licenses is obtained by the Department of Fire Prevention and Electrical Safety through the use of the license portal. Reciprocity exempts applicants from sitting the exam, but does not exempt them from other license requirements. It is important to make sure you meet all of the requirements for reciprocity licensure before submitting an application.
The state of Wyoming recognizes and has reciprocal agreements for journeyman electrical licenses with the following states:
- Arkansas;
- Colorado;
- Idaho;
- Maine;
- Minnesota;
- Montana;
- Nebraska;
- New Hampshire;
- New Mexico;
- North Dakota;
- Oklahoma;
- Oregon;
- South Dakota;
- Texas;
- Utah.
For applicants of reciprocity agreements for journeyman electrical licenses, they must meet the following requirements:
- The applicant must have obtained their license from the state they are reciprocating from through examination, and must have scored 70% or higher.
- The license must have been held for one year from the date of examination.
- The license must be in good standing with no violations.
- The applicant must meet the on-the-job training hours and apprenticeship hours that are approved by the Department of Labor school, for license requirements of a Wyoming electrical license.
- If the state the applicant is from does not require 4 years/576 hours of apprenticeship, supporting documentation of on-the-job training must be submitted with the application.
- The applicant must provide a copy of the current journeyman electrician card from the state they are reciprocating from.
The state of Wyoming has reciprocal agreements for master electrical licenses with the following states:
- Idaho;
- South Dakota;
- Utah.
For applicants of reciprocity agreements for master electrical licenses, they must meet the following requirements:
- The applicant must have obtained their license from the state they are reciprocating by examination, with a score of 75% or greater, and held for a minimum of 1 year from the examination date.
- The license must be in good standing with no violations.
- The applicant must meet the licensing requirements of the state of Wyoming.
- The applicant must provide a copy of their current master electrician card from the state they are reciprocating from.
Licenses available for reciprocation are only allowed one time. If a license gained through reciprocation lapses or expires, the applicant is ineligible to reciprocate their license again and will be required to obtain a Wyoming license by examination. If an applicant fails a test for master or journeyman license in the state of Wyoming, they are not eligible for a reciprocal license from their primary state until they have held that license for a period of three years — with proof of 16 hours of approved continuing education, 8 hours of which must be classes or seminars on code. Any licenses that have been “grandfathered-in” are not eligible for reciprocation in the state of Wyoming.

The National Electrical Code is adopted by the state of Wyoming without any modifications and used as the basis of the examinations for licenses.

If accepted, a letter of approval for the examination will be sent to the mailing address used on the application. The letter of approval will include a phone number for Pearson Vue for exam information, to pay the exam fees, and to schedule to sit for the exam.
Applications for Licenses
After passing the examination and receiving an approval letter by mail, go to the eLicense portal and create an account. To create an account you will need a copy of your government-issued ID, driver’s license, or passport uploaded and saved the device you are using to access the eLicense portal, and a unique email address. You may need a work verification form that has been filled out by an employer.
- Low Voltage / Limited Employment and Work Verification Form;
- Journeyman & Master Employment and Work Verification Form.
Once the pass letter and all required documentation have been uploaded to your eLicense profile and verified, you will receive instructions detailing how to make a payment. The license fee for a limited/low electrical license and a journeyman license is $100.00, the renewal is $50.00. The license fee for a master electrician is $200.00, with a renewal fee of $100.00. Payment of all fees should be made out to the “State of Wyoming”.
Licenses are valid for 3 years, renewing on July 1st of the 3rd year, no matter when the license was issued. Renewals are made through the eLicense portal and profile.

Wyoming Electrical License Types and Qualifications
The limited or low voltage, journeyman, and master licenses require specific amounts of on-the-job training with notarized letters from past or present employers that detail the experience, type of work, the number of on-the-job training hours, or the employment verification form, as directed by the Wyoming Electrical Board Rules. Any experience gained through the military must be included on a DD-214 Form and must be included with the application to be considered. Applicants will also need to provide official documents of classroom instruction in an apprenticeship program, or transcripts for electrical related courses through an accredited school.
Limited/Low voltage Electrical License
The qualifications to apply for a limited or low voltage electrical license include:
- Two years/4,000 hours of on-the-job training which must directly relate to the category of low voltage or the limited technician being applied for, with approved and notarized documentation from the employer.
Low voltage technician licenses include:
- LV-G – Low voltage work for all categories under 90 volts.
- LV-A – Low voltage work for alarm systems under 90 volts.
- LV-C – Low voltage work for communication systems under 90volts.
- LV-S – Low voltage work for sound systems under 90 volts.
- LV-T – Low voltage work for television and satellite systems under 90 volts.
- LV-X – Low voltage work for control systems under 90 volts.
- LV-LS – Low voltage work for lawn sprinkler systems under 90 volts.
Limited technician licenses include:
- LM-E – Electrical work for elevator systems limited to electrical work on the load side of the equipment disconnect.
- LM-S – Electrical work for electric signs limited to electrical work on the load side of the equipment disconnect.
- LM-W – Electrical Work for water well and irrigation systems limited to electrical work on the load side of the equipment disconnect.
- LM-L – Limited electrical work for maintaining light fixtures.
- LM-H – Limited electrical work for heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems limited to electrical work on the load side of the equipment.
Journeyman Electrical License
The qualifications to apply for a journeyman license include:
- Evidence of four years/8,000 hours of work experience in the wiring industry.
- This work history must include experience in planning, laying out, NEC, and must have occurred under the direct supervision of a qualified electrician for a licensed electrical contractor.
- Experience should consist of electrical installation in residential, commercial and industrial categories. No more than 75% of the four years may be in a singular category.
- 144 hours per year, or 576 hours over four years of an apprenticeship of a successfully completed electrically relate classroom instruction through an approved program.
- Up to two years/4,000 hours of credit may be given for the study of electrically related courses at an accredited school, exceeding the 576 hours.
Master Electrical License
The qualifications to apply for a master electrical license include:
- Evidence of eight years/16,000 hours of work experience in the electrical wiring industry. Four of these eight years must have been completed as a licensed journeyman. Experience must include planning, laying out, and NEC under the direct supervision of a qualified electrician for a licensed electrical contractor. Experience should consist of electrical installation in residential, commercial, as well as industrial industries.
- 576 hours of electrically related classroom instruction.
- School experiences should be documented with official transcripts which indicate the number of credit hours, or the actual number of classroom hours of electrically related courses.
Electrician Apprenticeship Requirements
To become a journeyman or master electrician in the state of Wyoming you must complete an apprenticeship program. To participate or complete an apprenticeship program, the applicant must apply for a Wyoming Apprentice License through the eLicense portal. Those seeking a new apprenticeship license must begin within 10 days of the start of employment.
For those applying for a new apprenticeship license with previous on-the-job training under a licensed contractor and supervised by a licensed journeyman or master electrician, the applicant may submit these hours on the initial application only. An Apprentice Electrician OJT Work Experience Verification form must be completed and included.
A letter from previous employment must also be included. The on-the-job letter must be on company letterhead, must include the applicant’s name, and a breakdown of the hours worked in residential, commercial, and industrial. The letter must also include the company and supervisors license numbers, and be signed and notarized by the employer.
A Previous and Existing License Form will need to be completed and included in the application by which you are requesting on-the-job credit. All licenses previously or currently held must also be listed even if you are not requesting on-the-job credit.
Prior apprenticeship training must also be included in the initial application. Qualified apprenticeship training must be from a training program approved by The Office of Apprenticeship, United States Department of Labor, or you must provide transcripts of an equivalent training program.
Apprenticeship licenses must be approved annually. The apprentice year runs from 7/1 (July 1st) of the previous year to 6/30 (the 30th of June) of the current year. Your application OTJ Form must be completed by your employer and signed by a licensed journeyman or master electrician you worked under. Any submission of OJT forms from previous years will be denied until a correct form with current hours is submitted. Renewal must also include the apprenticeship education obtained during the year.
Apprentice years are as follows:
- Year One – OJT 0-1,999 hours, and school 0-143 hours, supervision: 100%.
- Year Two – OJT 2,000-3,999 hours, and school 144-287 hours, supervision: 100%.
- Year Three – OJT 4,000-5,999 hours, and school 288-431 hours, supervision: 50%.
- Year Four – OJT 6,000-7,999 hours, and school 432-575 hours, supervision: 25%.
- Year Five – OJT 8,000-10,000 hours, and school 576+ hours, supervision 25%
- Year Six – OJT 10,000 +, and school 576+, supervision: 100%
It is important to note that apprentices do not progress through years by holding the license for a year, but by the progress of completing the required OJT and education to proceed to the next year.
